Timeline of Babcock Investment Company
Charles I. Babcock, Sr. is general manager for the Fred T. Ley Co. (builder of the Chrysler Building, NYC) while in Peru, Chile, and the Bahamas. He manages such large projects as the Chilean National Archives, La Nacíon newspaper office, Chilean Presidential Palace, and the Fort Montague Hotel in Nassau.
Charles I. Babcock, Sr. returns to the US and founds Babcock Investment Company in Miami, FL.
1940-1960
Charles Babcock Sr. and his son Charles I. Babcock Jr., named president in 1952, develop and construct thousands of single family homes and commercial projects in south Florida.
A third generation begins as Charles I. Babcock, III “C.I.” joins The Babcock Company as an Engineering & Land Development Manager.
1981-1990s
C.I. Babcock, III moves his family to Clearwater, FL – and incorporates new development arm “Cornerstone Communities Inc”, developing several thousand residential lots and commercial and office developments in the Tampa Bay Market.
2000-2015
A fourth generation joins the family business as C.I.’s son Chris is brought on in 2003. The company builds more than 50,000 sf of office & retail, sells 100s of acres of land to national retailers (Publix and Lowe’s), acquires, rehabilitates and sells over $50MM in foreclosed assets and notes bought during the 2008 recession, and amasses a single family rental portfolio totaling 100s of units.
2015-2018
Chris moves his family to Greenville to start the South Carolina arm of Babcock Investment Company. Acquires 20,000sf, 100 year old Beaux Arts school house in downtown, gut renovates, and sells in 2018 to an investment management firm.
2018-2020
Chris assembles 1.4 acres on N. Main Street in downtown Greenville, SC. Entitles and develops 25 luxury townhomes. www.nomacityterrace.com. The Greenville office is also in the entitlement phase for a 25-lot subdivision in the sought-after Hollingsworth Park neighborhood. Available for sale in 2021.
2020-2022
Chris brings on his brother in law Anderson Baxley to join the team as a project manager. They complete the development and sale of NoMa City Terrace, 25 luxury townhomes in downtown Greenville.
2023
A new custom home subdivision in Hollingsworth Park is nearing completion and lots are now sold out.
2024
Site development is underway at Bethel Townes for 78 townhome lots in Mauldin, SC to be sold to national homebuilder Ryan Homes. To be completed and sold in 2024.
